How Best to Leverage AI With Effective and Responsible Governance

Board Skills and Obligations

Navigating AI governance in the global fracturing world today is a major challenge. AI is under construction at a continued daily pace. It is a rigorous workload to keep up to date on facts, changes and how to meet compliance obligations  as they constantly expand.

As AI opportunities are exciting, boards, management and AI product developers all have new responsibilities to meet. Boards now have new skills and do this well.

For context, board members now need to:

  • Ensure AI is aligned with the corporate strategy
  • Assess the long-term risks it poses while exploring the opportunities for using it, especially to address global challenges like climate change and inequality.
  • Develop an in-depth understanding of the regulatory, ethical and security challenge in AI governance -- across global, regional and national AI regulation.
  • Explore how AI impacts on global  power dynamics, trade, security and human rights.
  • Understand the ethical concerns tied to AI, including transparency, bias and fairness, accountability and social impact.
  • Research and discuss evolving models of AI governance, as global standards are emerging and potential international agencies are underway and can shape the future of AI regulation in new ways.
  • Study cases to guide on ways to create frameworks for solutions to meet AI regulation, governance and international cooperation.
A board evaluating a new AI tool should:

  • Ensure governance and oversight to ensure there is clear accountability with who owes deployment and monitoring, cross-functional reviews by legal, compliance, IT security and business units impacted by it.
  • Ask whether AI tolls comply with applicable laws, as they vary by jurisdiction.
  • Review and set practices for responsible and ethical AI use and transparent AI design, governance of data and cyber-security, risk and liability management and disclosure and risk to company reputation.
  • Investigate and ensure the AI product developing company is meeting the growing set of their regulatory, legal and ethical obligations, as global AI regulation is accelerating. The obligations apply both across the AI tool lifecycle and depends on the jurisdiction and risk level of the AI tool.
  • Establish contingency and incident response plans.
This is a complex challenge. Reach out for our guidance and resource support for any questions your board may have.

Prepare Yourself for Board Work Ahead as a Certified Candidate With Current Skills to Serve

Care to Learn What Graduates Have to Say?

“I thoroughly enjoyed the course, especially the very compelling case studies, and discussions with my colleagues and course leaders.  Every week we read and discussed current and complex board issues and thoroughly review the many decisions to be made and parties involved.  Case studies were taken from recent headlines, so the discussions were even more interesting and relevant. I valued the global perspective brought by the American and European instructors. I leave the course feeling much more informed and prepared to serve on a board. My colleagues are professionals with extensive experience in many areas of a company and this experience added to the thought leadership and thorough discussion of each topic. Thank you for your time and dedication to our class. “    Mary Lee Sharp
